Peak Hurricane Season is Here!

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

It's Peak Season for Hurricanes! Here's What You Should Know and Share With Your Family.

Stay Aware. Be Prepared. As we enter peak hurricane season the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management ("NJOEM") continues to monitor tropical activity along with our state and federal emergency management partners.

Now is the time to determine ways to stay close and connected regarding your evacuation plans and locations.

COVID-19 Considerations

  • Due to COVID-19, you’ll need more time than usual to prepare.
  • Consider neighbors, pets, extended family and how you plan to check-in/safely evacuate and to where. Be sure to visit Register Ready, the State's "Special Needs" Registry for Disaster, or call 2-1-1 for assistance.
  • Pack masks, sanitizer, and gloves in your evacuation kit that you would take to a shelter.

Gather emergency supplies to build an emergency kit/go-bag for your family.

  • If you don’t have all the supplies you need at home, and you are a little nervous to spend a lot of time in a public place exposed to COVID-19, be strategic about your shopping trip.
  • Buy as many supplies as you can from a single store to prevent being exposed to the virus at multiple stores.
  • Consider buying slightly more supplies than you think you need to avoid multiple trips.
  • Ensure you have the necessary medical supplies, and if possible, refill prescriptions to have plenty on hand.
  • Additionally, consider food shopping services available in your area, such as Instacart, Amazon Fresh, FreshDirect, Peapod, and Shipt (to name a few).

Pets are family too! Be sure to include them in your emergency plans. Learn more safety information here: Animal Emergency.
